GCW History
The GOLD COUNTRY WOODCRAFTERS (GCW) club was founded April 2007 by John Brideson a 15 year employee and class instructor at Woodcraft Supply in Sacramento. John recognized the need to provide woodworking craftsmen in the El Dorado County area a venue for sharing in their common interest. Joining John were Burt Stride, Treas., Steve Armstrong, Hank Wilson, Don Flowers, Jim Kerth, Bruce Woods, Paul Velk, Roy Perkins, Mike Root, Dave Boutcher, and Bill Prosch. They were aided and encouraged by Sacramento Area Woodworkers (SAW) club members Gary Foster, Neil Knutsen and Jack VanKeuren.
The primary objective was to offer a monthly fellowship of like-minded woodworker craftsmen in the El Dorado County area and to provide a resource for woodworking information and skills that would be helpful to all skill levels. Proposed club meeting programs were to include member project show and tell, tool swaps, libraries (how to books, tapes, DVDs, etc) and guest speakers.
The club meetings were well attended and membership grew to 50 members in the first year. After three years, Pres. John Brideson was succeeded by Hank Wilson who served through 2011. Mr. Gail Cone became president in September 2011. The club continues to prosper with the leadership and guidance of the GCW Executive Committee.
Throughout the year GCW activities now include project contests, member shop tours, vendor
presentations, member presentations, and helpful Q and A’s among members. At each meeting members get a chance to show off their latest projects and participate in a raffle with great prizes. Each GCW meeting makes for a unique and rewarding experience fostering great camaraderie. A highlight each year is the GCW program to make and distribute wooden toys for needy children in the area for the Christmas holidays.
